The only side effect other than pure heat, which many people rather seem to enjoy, may be stomach irritation - especially true with capsules, since capsules give the body no warning. We use 160,000 HU pure cayenne. That's is really hot (but not the hottest on the market). By comparison Tabasco Sauce (good stuff) is about 40,000 HU. You can make Cool Cayenne by adding 1 part peppermint or ginger to 1 part Cayenne. Cayenne's only side effects are nausea and vomiting if you take too much cayenne before you build up a tolerance to it. The way that you build tolerance to cayenne is to start with a 1/4 teaspoon cayenne in water 3x a day, next day 1/2 teaspoon of cayenne, and so on until you are up to 1 teaspoon of cayenne in water 3x a day, with meals. If you are sensitive to cayenne, just take it slower, 2 days at 1/4 teaspoon, and so on. If you feel some nausea coming on, just take a little ginger or peppermint as an antidote and that stops it. Milk or yogurt will quickly cool the burn.
Fresh Ginger according o TCM is hot and pungent its function is to 1. Warms the center and expels cold: Used to treat chest and abdominal pain and distention, and vomiting or diarrhea due to interior cold blocking the middle associated with deficiency or excess. 2. Remember the typical antidote for the burn caused by hot peppers is MILK or YOGURT. It is the FAT in Dairy products (or coconut) that counteracts the heat. It is the oil (capsaicin ) in the pepper that is the killer. Some folks claim lemon juice or vinegar (or a low pH ) will neutralize the burn. as capsaicin is alkalineIt doesn't (IMO it makes it worse). Vinegar will not elicit any change in capsaicin function at all. Neither will temperature. Cold water will not dissolve the burn - but it does help to physically carry away the burning oil.
I never tried this one: Mix sugar in with the water. Thats what was used in 1912 when they wanted to know which peppers were the absolute hottest. The Scoville Heat Units (SHU). Volunteers would take a known amount of capsium form each pepper and placed a drop on their tongue. The number of drops it took the Sugar Water to relieve the pain became the SHU Value. Back then Cayenne was rated as the hottest with 30,000 - 50,000 SHU. Oh man, talk about patience. Today I'm guessing there's a dozen peppers that scream over 2,000,000 HU. I know I won't be there for the count. I'd be the Ghost N Peppers.
If in the eyes then continuously flush with loads of water, I would dunk my face in a iced bowl of water with my face inches in front of a fan. (I once was a Deputy Sheriff, and offered by body to test Police Pepper Spray while training in Defensive Tactics) Use gloves and a cloth cover for your face, nose and mouth. Immediately discard the gloves and the cloth. You will recover, keep calm, breathe slow and easy, and keep the milk, water and fan going. Took me, if I recall correctly, a good 30-45 minutes to recover.
For burning hands try diluted bleach. (one part bleach 4 parts water) with just a very quick dip. Much of the pain from hot peppers is carried by the hands to other more sensitive parts of the body. Best advise wear plastic gloves.
